From Barbizon, the painters' village, to Versailles.
A move, a continuity
Galerie Roz In Winter was born in 2018 in Barbizon, at 61 Grande Rue, in the village that gave its name to the Barbizon School. For nearly eight years, Lila Roz welcomed close to 600 artists and staged a new exhibition every month.
In 2026, the gallery moves to Versailles, at Carré 59, 59 Rue Royale. The place changes, the standard remains: bringing contemporary creation into dialogue with a heritage that reaches back to the 19th-century plein air painters.
The Barbizon School
In the 19th century, painters left their Parisian studios to settle on the edge of the Fontainebleau forest. Millet, Rousseau, Corot and a few others founded the Barbizon School, at the origin of plein air landscape painting and of what would become Impressionism.
The village kept the atmosphere that had drawn them: the Grande Rue lined with studios, the shifting light of the forest, the silence at the edge of the trees. It was in this setting that the gallery came to life.
Paint what you see, not what you think you know: this watchword of the Barbizon painters still inspires the artists we represent.
Today, in Versailles
At Carré 59, the gallery continues its mission: some twenty represented artists, ephemeral exhibitions renewed each month, openings and encounters. The spirit of Barbizon travels with us: attention to light, to gesture, to landscape.
